Volta Ciclista a Catalunya Stage 4: Verona, Brambilla Make Escape Group on Mountain Stage

Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team riders Carlos Verona and Gianluca Brambilla did their best to be a factor in a tough 217.7km 4th stage of Volta Ciclista a Catalunya, which featured five categorized climbs (2 HC) on Thursday.

Brambilla and Verona attacked with 21 other riders 40km into the stage, but the group reduced in number with each passing climb. On 25km Port del Canto, Brambilla and Verona could no longer maintain contact.

Out of the 23 rider group, Daniel Martin (Garmin-Sharp). Jose Herrada (Movistar Team) and Robert Kiserlovski (Radioshack-Leopard) eventually were ahead with less than 15km to go. As the trio approached the HC summit, Martin decided to go solo at the 7.9km to go point. He had a 1'54" gap at the time. He eventually rode to victory, while Joaquin Rodriguez (Katusha) and Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team) were 2nd and 3rd. Quintana had attacked wth less than 3km to go, and with 1km to go Rodriguez, who attacked shortly after Quintana, worked his way up to Quintana's wheel.

Martin is the new leader of Volta Ciclista a Catalunya.

Dries Devenyns was the top OPQS finisher. OPQS looks next to a 156.5km Stage 5 on Friday, where a bunch sprint is possible.
