Giro d'Italia Stage 11: Uran Remains 6th GC After Crash

Etixx - Quick-Step rider Rigoberto Uran suffered a crash in the final kilometers of 153km Giro d'Italia Stage 11 on Wednesday, from Forlì to Imola. However, the Colombian rider was able to get up immediately and catch back to the maglia rosa group to lose no time in the arrival. Ilnur Zakarin (Katusha) won the stage solo out of an original 10-rider breakaway that was down to seven at about 40km to go in the stage.

Carlos Betancur (AG2R - La Mondiale) was 2nd, and Franco Pellizotti (Androni Giocattoli - Sidermec) was 3rd out of the chase group behind Zakarin. Uran finished 29th in the stage. Maxime Bouet was also in the group, in 38th place.

Etixx - Quick-Step looks next to 190km Stage 12 on Thursday. The stage, from Imola to Vicenza (Monte Berico), is completely flat for 126.1km, and then is undulating until the finish with two Category 4 climbs and, including the finish. There is also a Category 3 climb.

Uran's crash involved the entire left side of his body making contact with the ground. As a result of the crash he has pain and abrasions of his shoulder, muscle soreness included. He also has abrasions on his elbow, hip, and upper back.

"I was riding behind another guy in the peloton," Uran said. "He slowed a bit while changing gears and I touched his wheel. I was immediately on the ground. Fortunately the team car with a new bike wasn't far. So I got on the new bike and my first thought was to chase and come back immediately. I managed to do it. Fortunately I stayed in the peloton until the finish. It is a bit of a pity because after the rest day Monday and flat stage on Tuesday I was recovered a bit from the efforts of the first week while suffering bronchitis. A crash is not the ideal situation for the moment, and of course tomorrow I may feel a bit differently than today as sometimes, as consequences of these crashes, you don't fully feel the effects until the next day or later. But we have to deal with the situation as it is. The Giro continues for me tomorrow."
