Tom Boonen had several victories and strong performances 2014, in an important comeback year following a very unlucky 2013 due to injuries. Boonen started his 2014 racing campaign with two stage wins at Tour of Qatar, where he owns the record for career victories with twenty-two. He then sprinted to victory at Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, and powered his way to two stage wins at Tour of Belgium. But the King of the Cobbles also was a key component in the Paris-Roubaix victory of Niki Terpstra, as his efforts earlier in the race put his teammates into an advantaged situation in the final kilometers, and with riders worrying about Tornado Tom, Niki was able to attack and win.

In 2015, Boonen will again eye further success at the Spring Classics, where he is a legend. A fourth victory at the Ronde or a fifth win in Roubaix would make him the rider with the most wins ever in these hugely popular races, and he would be able to rightly claim a place among the legends of cycling. “I was happy that 2014 was a big improvement from the bad luck of 2013, but to be honest I think my year could have been a bit better with again better luck,” says Tom. “The records? I don’t think about them. My goal is to arrive at ‘my’ races in top form and then, as always, it will be the road, with all its many variables, that decides the winner.”

Tom's news

Etixx - Quick-Step rider Rigoberto Uran is now 6th GC, +2'10", after a breakaway was able to avoid being caught and decided the 200km 10th Stage of the Giro d'Italia, from Civitanova Marche to Forlì, on Tuesday.

Etixx - Quick-Step rider Tom Boonen finished 18th after launching his sprint from the middle of the road near the front of the peloton at Giro d'Italia Stage 6 on Thursday. Andre Greipel (Lotto Soudal) won the 183km Stage, from Montecatini Terme to Castiglione della Pescaia, with Matteo Pelucchi (IAM Cycling) 2nd and Sacha Modolo (Lampre-Merida) 3rd.

Etixx - Quick-Step riders Rigoberto Uran and Tom Boonen finished 16th and 18th in the bunch sprint arrival of 177km Stage 2, from Albenga to Genova on Sunday. Though the stage was far from difficult in terms of profile — with only one small Categorized climb in the stage — crashes in the final kilometers caused splits in the peloton, and also Pieter Serry to abandon before the last lap after falling hard.

I love coming to California, it's a hard but beautiful race. California is actually a very wonderful place and everybody is super nice, which is a pleasant bonus.
