Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco Stage 5: Velits 20th in Race of Attrition
Despite miserable racing conditions and a difficult course that included 10 categorized climbs, Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team rider Peter Velits kept himself with some of the best in the peloton, finishing 20th at Vuelta Ciclista al Paisco Stage 5 on Friday.
Many riders abandoned, leaving it to a very select group in the final for the stage. Richie Porte (Team Sky ProCycling) attacked with about a kilometer to go to win the race out of an eight rider lead group. They caught Omar Fraile (Caja Rural), who went solo on a difficult day, with 5.8km to go. Samuel Sanchez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) was 2nd, and Sergio Henao (Team Sky ProCycling) 3rd.
OPQS looks next to the 24km Stage 6 time trial on Saturday. Tony Martin finished Stage 5 and he — along with Velits — will be aiming to do their best for a top result in the final stage.
