David De La Cruz had a unique path to cycling. As a teenager he participated in other sports first such as football, running, and swimming, and purchased a road bike simply to ride back-and-forth to his job every day. One day he had a puncture and needed the assistance of other riders along the road. He then asked if he could ride with them. His life changed after this moment, at about 18 years old. Within two years of riding amateur, he became a professional. He earned his nickname "Mazoman" (Thor) when a mechanic instructed him to use a hammer to lower his saddle, but he didn't have one. So he used his hand!
De La Cruz loves cycling as a whole, including the “strict” life of professionals due to the obvious improvements that come with dedication and discipline. But he loves it the most because of the freedom. “I remember when I had my first bike. I didn’t have a car, and because of my bicycle I felt freedom. I could go anywhere I want. This is one of the best things. Your own body gives you the freedom to go anywhere. The the store, the mountains, anything."
De La Cruz arrived at Etixx- Quick-Step because he considers it to be the best team in the world. “I always thought when a team like this wanted me, it is the top of your professional career. When I got a call from Patrick Lefevere saying he was interested in me, I was the happiest person in the world.”
