Martin is a genuine team player capable of remarkable personal performances, especially in the time trial. Martin started riding with his brother Peter when he was 13, dividing his time between ice hockey in the winter and bike riding in the summer. Martin has a calm and thoughtful personality, loves music, and enjoys making time to read a good book. He’s quite attached to his family and proud of his Slovak origins and the culture of his country, which he thinks is “the most beautiful in the world!” In 2014 Martin Velits had some top 30 and top 15 finishes in stage races, including AMGEN Tour of California and Paris-Tours. Martin will again be one of the team’s reliable workhorses. “How many kilometers have I already ridden pulling at the front of the group? I don’t know, but I can tell you that it’s a lot,” says Martin with a laugh. Martin is now the father of a son, Adam, who was born March 21st, 2014.

Martin's news

OPQS announces the extension of contracts for Spanish rider Carlos Verona, and Slovak rider Martin Velits, for two more seasons (2015 & 2016).

The bunch sprint was once again foiled at AMGEN Tour of California Stage 5. This time, the cause was Cat. 1 San Marcos Pass late in the 173km stage on Thursday.

Omega Pharma - Quick-Step Cycling Team knew it had to do its best to protect Mark Cavendish in the crucial Stage 5 of Tour of Qatar on Thursday, and the team worked doggedly at the front to ensure he had perfect position for a third straight victory, and the sixth win for OPQS in 2013 in three different disciplines.
